Dr Niall Furlong MD FRCP
I am a Consultant Physician, specializing in Acute Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology in the North-West of England, U.K.
I graduated from the University of Liverpool (U.K.) in 1995 (MB ChB) and undertook my post-graduate specialist training in Merseyside, U.K. I completed my MD research on ‘insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes’ in 2005 and took up my consultant post the same year.
Since 2005 I have worked at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust where I have been the clinical lead for technology in type 1 diabetes (insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring) including ‘hybrid closed loop treatment’ (or ‘artificial pancreas’), and the lead for diabetes foot care. I also work as an acute medicine physician within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) of the hospital, assessing and treating patients with acute medical problems, some of whom require hospital admission for on-going inpatient treatment.
My specialty interest of Diabetes and Endocrinology covers a wide range of illnesses, with most patients being managed in outpatient clinics. Much of my work relates to the management of patients with diabetes mellitus (and diabetes-related complications), but this field also covers a range of conditions relating to the endocrine system. This includes conditions that result in over- or underproduction of hormones, and structural abnormalities of the endocrine glands themselves.
Understanding human biology, especially anatomy and physiology is key in Diabetes and Endocrinology. My interest in these subjects is what initially attracted me to study medicine and ultimately led me to my current role.
In addition to my clinical role delivering patient care, I am also involved in education and training of medical students and post-graduate trainee doctors.
